Healthier Relationships How?
May 15, 2018
When I first moved overseas I needed to learn a new language. As I learned the ins and outs of reading, writing and speaking this foreign language, I encountered many moments of miscommunication and misunderstanding. I soon learned, however, that miscommunication and misunderstanding aren't unique to learning foreign languages; they are potential stumbling blocks for everyone, everywhere, even for two people who already speak the same language. What I have found to be extra embarrassing is when two people who speak the same native language can't understand each other. As I began to explore further into the aspects of healthy communication, I began to see that it doesn't come naturally to many of us. However, even though it may not come naturally, everyone can learn the skills to better communication so that we can experience healthier and more life-giving relationships.
Even though I am aware I can always continue to grow in becoming a better communicator, I truly believe that I have made some major progress in this area. While I may still misunderstand people and people may misunderstand me from time to time, I feel more confident in being able to address these areas that lead to miscommunication. As I work through them, it minimizes the potential for misunderstandings and broken relationships.
My prayer for each of us is that we will commit to learning how to be better communicators and not to settle for "it is what it is." I believe that as you gain a better understanding of how to become a great communicator you will enjoy healthier relationships.
